    Notes
    • "John Sprouse was a well to do plantation owner in Noxubee Co. Miss. and in Grange Co. Texas. He owned a string of race horses and slaves and lived like the proud Southern Gentleman that he was. Catherine Wooldridge Hundley married John Sprouse 6 Jan 1835 at Macon Miss. She was a very spiritual minded woman who loved her God and sought his guidance in all things. When the Mormon Elders came to call she heard their message of angels coming to earth and restoring to his prophet the Gospel Christ taught in the meridian of time. She soon became a firm believer for it was shown to her in a dream or vision that this message was true.

When Great Grandfather John heard that the Mormons had been there he was furious and said that if they ever set foot on his place again he would horsewhip them. This did not frighten Great Grandmother for she invited the Elders back again and again hiding them from Great Grandfather. She had to hear more of their message which she accepted and was baptized. On her death bed she exacted a promise from Great Grandfather to take the children to Utah to be educated. He was a man of honor and kept his word. What a caravan that must have been coming up from Texas. Great Grandfather Sprouse not only brought his family and servants who were formerly slaves, but he brought the first string of race horses to Utah also.

Great Grandfather Sprouse put his resources in to storage wheat and when famine came any deserving person could have what they needed to eat at no cost. He joined the church and later married Nancy Reddick Greer Johnson.

      Addendum --

In the year 1850 later than Oct 19th which is the date of the 1850 census on file in Grimes County Texas court house, there was held at the home of John Sprouse a great gathering of the clan and a fine dinner was served. It is thought to be either Thanksgiving or Christmas. Great Grandmother took this occasion while they were yet seated at the table, to say what was in her heart and could not wait to be said. It was at this time... to Utah to be educated. She then excused herself, saying that she was tired and wanted to rest. She went to her room and when the servants went to waken her some time later they found that she was dead. After the funeral, it seems that Great Grandfather forgot his promise and for some time followed the duties of his farm. One day he was riding, when he was struck down by an invisible force. He did not know what hit him, but knew why. The next day he went to the county seat and started proceedings to sell his home and property and prepared to emigrate to Utah. According to his own record given in the temple records on the 6th March 1857, he was baptized in 1850." [13]
