Photos from DUP

Post by Ian »

international society daughters of utah pioneers (known as DUP) maintains the pioneer memorial museum in salt lake city. this museum would be a good place to visit. a large collection of photos and portraits is stored in the basement of the museum. copies are available for purchase. we should obtain copies of photos and portraits of our ancestors.

of particular interest is a portrait floating around the internet that has been identified as william huntington, jr. according to the museum's photo department, the museum holds an original “carte de visite” photograph of this portrait that was donated by “zina y. card” and was handwritten on the back: “William Huntington Father of Utah Huntingtons.” here's an image of the portrait:
william huntington jr.jpg
it would be great to learn more about this portrait. here are some of my questions:

was “zina y. card” william huntington’s granddaughter, brigham young’s daughter, born in 1850, wife of charles ora card? or was “zina y. card” the daughter of charles ora card, born in 1888, married to hugh b. brown? one of the past presidents of DUP was “zina young card,” president from 2 oct 1909 to 11 apr 1911. my assumption is that the “zina y. card,” who donated this “carte de visite,” was brigham young’s daughter, born 1850, and that she was a former president of the DUP, but it would be nice to confirm this.

more importantly, can the DUP provide any further information about this “carte de visite”? it seems that it was a photograph taken of a painting. can the DUP provide information about the location of the original painting, or provide any clues? this is the most important question, because we would try to track down the original painting, if it still exists. that might help us to positively identify the subject as our ancestor, william huntington, jr. (born 1784, died 1846), who was mentioned in the doctrine and covenants 124:132.

after getting as much information as we can from the DUP, we want digital copies of both sides of the “carte de visite”, in the highest quality/resolution possible. their website says to call ahead to ensure that personal assistance will be available in the photo department when you visit.
so let it be written... so let it be done.

the DUP collection also includes photos of sarah elizabeth sprouse huntington (1844-1876). one of the photos depicts four people and on the back is penciled: "Geo Wm Huntington and first wife Elizabeth Sprouse." another photo supposedly depicts george william huntington and sarah elizabeth sprouse huntington and four children, but i suspect it's this photo of george william huntington and his second wife, rosetta agnes squires. we would like high-quality digital images of both photos, front and back.
so let it be written... so let it be done.

also, the DUP has a photo of our ancestor, pamelia emily wooldridge hundley rooker (1801-1887). they say it's a photocopy of a picture that looks like it came from a book. this photo would be good to have, as well as information about the book.
so let it be written... so let it be done.
