The Mt. Rushmore of Composers!

Post by Edward »

IMAGINE:

A committee is being organized to re-construct Mt. Rushmore to commemorate, not the greatest presidents, but the greatest and most influential composers in the history of music. YOU are in charge of this committee. So: WHO are your top FOUR picks for Mt. Musicmore? Will you perpetuate the cult of the Three B's? Will you afflict the mountainside with the faces of Schoenberg or other modernist favorites? Will you go the Wagnerian route, or traverse the ways of Brahms? Submit your top choices today!

WHO ARE THE TOP FOUR COMPOSERS WORTHY OF IMMORTALITY ON MT. MUSICMORE?!?

I recommend Bach, Vaughan Williams, Rachmaninoff and Beethoven.

And if we had an Operatic Mt. Rushmore, I would choose:

Mozart
Rossini
Verdi
Wagner

the criteria are greatness and influence, but i value greatness more than influence. therefore, based on my limited knowledge:

1. beethoven (in my opinion, the only indisputable choice, for greatness and influence)
2. mozart (belongs in the top three, for greatness and influence)
3. bach (belongs in the top three, for greatness and influence)
4. brahms (the most difficult choice... another germanic composer, but among the greatest ever... not as influential, but his influence tends to be underrated)

honorable mentions for greatness: schubert, handel

honorable mentions for influence: wagner, stravinsky, debussy

honorable mentions for personal taste: tchaikovsky, ravel, bizet

so many great composers not mentioned, maybe we'll do a longer list sometime.
so let it be written... so let it be done.

Just for fun:
The original intent:

and the pre-sculpted appearance:

I appreciate the precedent for "honorable mention"

Here are four from me:

Claudio Monteverdi
Georg Friedrich Händel
Richard Wagner
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky

I think I am tentatively going to go with:

Bach
Haydn
Mozart
Beethoven

But I feel like somehow I should have a more modern composer in there ... oh, what a sore test it is to come up with such a list!
