Case in point:

I can imagine a PDQ Bach rendition of this where the piano, on its first entrance, just keeps going on and on until it goes all the way down to the piano's lowest notes, and the piano player keeps on playing even though his hands had run off the key board.

You guys are only now discovering Ferrante & Teicher? These are Juilliard's finest!

As a sidenote, Exodus won an academy award for Best Original Score in 1960. I can only conclude that this is why Flight of Dragons was overlooked years later.

Does Ferrante look suspiciously like Don Music from Sesame Street?

I think these guys are the very definition of elevator music.
...and I do not mean music that elevates.

Moving right along, here is what I would consider to be an excellent rendition of Tchaikovsky's dance of the sugar plumb fairies performed by Percy Grainger. Grainger was a very popular pianist in his day, and I am a tremendous fan of his compositions and arrangements of folk music, of which he was particularly keen. From what I understand, he was rather eccentric, but very highly regarded by many of the great composers of his time. In this recording, I am impressed with Grainger's ability to create what I would consider to be a broad pallet of colors from such a homogeneous instrument. He replicates the effects and timbres of an orchestra very convincingly.
