Apparently there's a copy of this book in the Los Angeles Public Library.

here’s another good book to find. it seems we have an ancestor named friedrich heinrich gelwicks. apparently his “family book” was preserved, and an english translation was published in 1979 (it would be great to find a copy of the original german). pennsylvania germans customarily maintained a family book, which was an account of sums advanced to children before the parents’ death. in the interest of fairness, many pennsylvania german fathers maintained meticulous accounting records because each child was usually entitled to an equal share of the parents’ estate.

we seem to descend from gelwicks’ daughter, eva dorothea. here’s an abstract from the book: “Frederick Henry Gelwicks was born 1712 probably in Germany. He married Maria Dorothea Euler in 1733 at Trappe in Pennsylvania. Their children were: Johann Friedrich (1733-1813), Catharina (1735), Catharina (1737), Georg Carl (1739-1817), Elias Daniel (1738-?), Eva Dorothea Meyer (1743-1792), Georg Peter (1746-1830), Johannes (1747), Johann Georg (1750-1816), Johann Nicholas (1752-?). The father and several sons served in the Revolution. About 1780 Frederick and his wife moved into Hanover where they died in 1783 and 1785.”

here’s information about the book:

Title: Friedrich Heinrich Gelwicks, shoemaker and distiller; accounts 1760-1783; Manheim Township, York County, Pennsylvania
Translated and Edited by: Larry M. Neff and Frederick Sheely Weiser
Number of Pages: 152
Publisher: Pennsylvania German Society
Date Published: 1979
ISBN: 0911122397
OCLC Number: 5619548
so let it be written... so let it be done.

thanks to lily for scanning the microfilmed records from the cathedral of the immaculate conception in fort wayne. we now have records of three additional siblings of jeremiah ervin: george, sarah elizabeth and margaret. we also now have additional records of their parents, joseph irvin and sarah ann bowser, and of their maternal grandparents, henry bowser and lenah sprenkle.

here's a link to a book published in 1968 by john p. dern titled "london churchbooks and the german emigration of 1709".

the book is very interesting, and of particular interest to us is the marriage record on page 22, from the london savoy german lutheran churchbook, for johan conradt euler and anna marg. gemelcks. his place of origin is recorded as "Dilligen im Hessischen" and her place of origin is recorded as "Griesheim im Ampt Oberhessen". the original text of the record, from page 45, follows:
Getraut Johan Conradt EULER, Johan EULERs Bürgers und einwohner in Dilligen im Hessischen Ehl. Sohn. Und Anna Marg. GEMELCKs, Johannes GEMELCKs Einwohners in Griesheim im Ampt Oberhessen Ehl. Tochter.
the husband's place of origin ("Dilligen im Hessischen") is identified on page 32, in terms of today's geography, as "Dillingen bei Friedrichsdorf (Obertaunus), Hessen", 12 km north from Frankfurt am Main, 5 km northeast from Bad Homburg, which now happens to be the exact location of the frankfurt germany temple. here it is on a map.

the wife's place of origin ("Griesheim im Ampt Oberhessen") is identified on page 32, in terms of today's geography, as "Frankfurt-Griesheim", Hessen Suburb in west Frankfurt am Main. here it is on a map.

we have not confirmed that this record identifies our ancestors. so far we believe that we descend from conrad euler and anna margaretha (_____). is this the same couple identified in the london churchbook? maybe we can search for another record that confirms the "gemelcks" maiden name in our ancestry? more research is needed.
so let it be written... so let it be done.

Stunning to me. Dillingen was one of the towns/villages part of my area when I served in Bad Nauheim a few miles north of there. I had to pass through Dillingen whenever we had to go to Frankfurt for conferences.

And Griesheim is a section of Frankfurt just west of Sachsenhausen where the mission home was located.

wow.
