PLEASE READ - a personal essay by Betsy Croft
This is an important thing I wrote. I am not willing to participate in the Huntington Family Forum any longer, as I do not believe it to be an effective mode of communication. However, as this website still exists on the public sphere, I need to let anyone who visits this website know about some imp...

Re: Brigham Young University
Do you think the BYU's administration were swayed by popular opinion with their actions regarding the honor code?I believe you've been swayed by popular opinion and will eventually regret this tone.

Steve I don't really appreciate the liberty you took in moving the thread's attention elsewhere. I was directly addressing the issue you were talking about in this thread. You may enjoy the liberties you can take as a site administrator, but it comes at a cost if you override other people's wishes. ...

Re: Brigham Young University
This thread is a perfectly acceptable place to discuss this. Maybe what you should have titled it was "People shouldn't protest BYU's backwards policies". In the end, you fail to realize how the protest has now ended up giving a lot of positive publicity to the church, as the policy change...

Re: Brigham Young University
Well in case you didn't know, the protest wasn't asking BYU to remove that part of the honor code. We specifically asked for an amnesty clause (which, in fact, is a change to the actual honor code) and other protections for victims of rape. And do they really do this all the time? Or are you just sa...

Re: Depression
Hey anyone who reads this forum! (which is nobody) please understand that if you have depression, you have not committed a sin! If you have repented and the depression persists, please see a doctor.
Okay back to your regularly scheduled over-simplified generalizations about mental illness.

Re: Brigham Young University
BYU is a great school. Ian's thinly-veiled comment on protests at the school was uncalled for, however. I was hoping that, having attended a protest about the honor code's policy on sexual abuse, it wouldn't lead to my family thinking I was against the church, but it appears I was wrong to hope for ...

I'm pretty sure that when sister Stephens said "searching the great and spacious buildings" she did not mean searching for a mental health professional.

Re: Gun Control
Ian. None of the victims injuries were considered life threatening. The event was certainly horrifying and tragic, but to try to compare this to the absolute lethality of guns is absurd. If this attacker had access to a gun, the carnage would have been much, much worse. Ah, but I see you are sharing...

Re: Depression
I do not think President Benson was referring to clinical depression (or MDD) here. Plus, in 1974 there was not as much known about depression and suicide as is known now. It's best to follow our modern day prophet's council in this regard. (See elder Holland's quote below) We now know that depressi...

Re: Depression
Depression is not included in what the phrase "men's hearts failing" implies. Depression is not the result of sin. It is not the result of not trying hard enough. It is not something new to our time. It is a clinical illness. For many, that list of 12 things is not enough to get them menta...

Re: Depression
I care about people who struggle with depression/suicidal thoughts. The church cares greatly about them too. I am grateful they are working with professionals to make the correct course of action (equal balance of spiritual and professional help) clear. Depression among the members of the church is ...

Re: Self-righteousness
The Savior loves us too much to leave us as He finds us. He invites His servants to preach the gospel, discern between truth and error, and help our families and neighbors to more effectively follow Him. As we are all imperfect, we do so the best we know how according to the knowledge shared by hol...
