Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time

Post by Tuly »

Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time by Mark Adams. I loved reading this book and wishing I could go. After reading of the arduous hike at the Inca Trail that leads to Machu Picchu, I decided to use google maps instead. I loved the photos and the glossary. Short review -
In 1911, Hiram Bingham III climbed into the Andes Mountains of Peru and “discovered” Machu Picchu. While history has recast Bingham as a villain who stole both priceless artifacts and credit for finding the great archeological site, Mark Adams set out to retrace the explorer’s perilous path in search of the truth—except he’d written about adventure far more than he’d actually lived it. In fact, he’d never even slept in a tent.
"Condemn me not because of mine imperfection,... but rather give thanks unto God that he hath made manifest unto you our imperfections, that ye may learn to be more wise than we have been." Mormon 9:31
