"The Next Iron Chef"
"The Next Iron Chef"
I know there are some Alton Brown fans in the family -- anybody been watching this show? (A fine thing for a Utahn to talk about such leisurely pursuits while all around all y'all the countryside is burning. Forgive my insensitivity. For the record, we have been praying for our loved ones and the people of California.) I watched the first episode today and found it truly gripping. I expected it to be hokey, and in many ways it was, but watching those talented chefs duke it out, knowing that each of them do things with food that I would never dream of -- I found it very engaging. Alton Brown seems to shine in this format. While he heckled the contestants I found myself both amused and sympathizing with the poor victims of his fury.
On of the contestants made fresh ricotta cheese for her dessert from cream and lemon juice! I mean! Who could muster such an inspired ingredient in a ninety minute competition?

You bet there are some Alton Brown fans here. I have been watching The Next Iron Chef also. I certainly like it better than the Next Food Network Star. These are incredible chefs. Can anyone believe how busy Alton Brown is?, I think he has four shows in the Food Network Channel!! - Thank you for your prayers, there are some very tragic stories in this area. We have been blessed to have not been seriously affected, nevertheless, Emma and I wear masks around the house, to not smell the constant smoke that is prevalent everywhere.

Additionally, we have just been informed that all schools in our entire district (the largest in Orange County) will be closed on Thursday due to the horrid air quality. I was at the Laguna Niguel Stake Center this morning which is a stunning vantage point for overlooking the entire Saddleback Valley and I was astounded by the extent of the disaster in just this section of the region. The whole expanse of sky here is covered by a thick acrid cloud of ash and smoke. It makes for some very eerie lighting effects. We are very fortunate, though, not to have been approached by the fire itself, although the Santiago fire (the one set by an arsonist) is just down the road in Lake Forest and Santa Margarita. It is yet to be seen how these events will affect the local economy.
But more to the topic, we're all grateful for Mom's and Emma's and Angela's fondness for the food channel.
