Headstones (ongoing)
Headstones (ongoing)
as part of our family history work, we're collecting photos of our ancestors' headstones and storing them on our website (link). to keep track of our progress, i'll try to maintain a list of graves that have not yet been added to our collection. this list is not comprehensive, obviously, but it's a starting point for anyone interested in visiting cemeteries and locating these graves.
for now, i'm limiting the list to direct ancestors buried in the united states, grouped by cemetery. click on the name to see more information about the person. as we obtain photos, names will be removed from the list.
so far, i've found a number of photos at findagrave.com, utahgravestones.org, and other websites. these websites are continually updated, so we may be able to find some of these graves online.
Salt Lake City Cemetery, Utah
John Sprouse (may not have a headstone, per findagrave.com)
Midway Cemetery, Utah
Robert Wright (?)
Janet Stevenson Wright (?)

so let it be written... so let it be done.
Re: Headstones (ongoing)
Roy and Grace, along with their son, Robert Bradford Huntington are buried all in the "New Tacoma Cemetery." That is an important distinction.

Re: Headstones (ongoing)
george william huntington is named on the back of his grandparents' headstone (george augustus neal and asenath cooley neal), along with his mother, mary molissa neal. here are pictures of that headstone: front and back. mary molissa neal is supposedly buried just south of this headstone and has no headstone of her own. i'm not sure whether george william has a headstone of his own, but he's supposedly buried somewhere in the salt lake city cemetery.
so let it be written... so let it be done.
Re: Headstones (ongoing)
I'm not a frequent visitor of graveyards, but the ones I have seen haven't had anything carved into the back of the headstones. I really like how these are done. I guess you'd have to update them periodically, maybe?
Re: Headstones (ongoing)
i think sometimes the headstones are put there long after the person was buried, that might have happened here.
so let it be written... so let it be done.
Re: Headstones (ongoing)
I'm looking forward to when i go to Peru next year to check out their graveyards and headstones.

Yes.
Wait until AFTER you've snapped the photo.
Then, very carefully...

Margaret and I learned today that the Salt Lake City Cemetery is large. Very large!
Re: Headstones (ongoing)
does the cemetery maintain a record of who's buried where?
so let it be written... so let it be done.
Re: Headstones (ongoing)
good question. i would imagine they do. they even have street signs there. we found platte L, block 6 looking for George William, for instance, but didn't find his headstone. they need those directories like they have at the mall.
Re: Headstones (ongoing)
i found these online, but i'm not sure where the photos were taken. these appear to be the headstones for richard jenkins davis and elizabeth cozzens davis. maybe someday, someone will visit willard cemetery in utah and confirm the location of these graves.
so let it be written... so let it be done.
